<p>Der Ort liegt in einer <a href="Oase" title="Oase">Oase</a> der <a href="Sahara" title="Sahara">Sahara</a> nahe der Grenze zu <a href="Algerien" title="Algerien">Algerien</a>.

<p>Tessalit hat 5.739 Einwohner.<sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Die Bevölkerung besteht vorwiegend aus <a href="Tuareg" title="Tuareg">Tuareg</a>. Anfang Februar 2012 eroberten Rebellen der <a href="Nationale_Bewegung_f%C3%BCr_die_Befreiung_des_Azawad" title="Nationale Bewegung für die Befreiung des Azawad">Nationalen Bewegung für die Befreiung des Azawad</a> (MNLA) Tessalit.<sup id="cite_ref-TAZHub_2-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-TAZHub-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

Am 9. Februar 2013 nahmen französische und afrikanische Truppen Tessalit

<p>Der Ort verfügt über eine Landepiste und liegt an der <a href="Tanezrouftpiste" title="Tanezrouftpiste">Tanezrouftpiste</a>, die <a href="Gao" title="Gao">Gao</a> in Mali mit <a href="Reggane" title="Reggane">Reggane</a> in Algerien verbindet.
